Susan Clay

Susan Clay

I am a Licensed Insolvency Practitioner currently working within Philip Gill & Co, Cardiff and Scotland, and have over 24 years experience of both Personal and Corporate insolvency.

I was born in a small mining village in the South Wales Valleys and left school in 1984 (with few qualifications) to work in within the insolvency department of Ernst & Young in Cardiff. I was fortunate to start my career during the recession of the 80s which afforded me the opportunity of becoming a “jack of all trades” working across all areas of insolvency.

The 80’s also saw the introduction of The Insolvency Act 1986 – the first major changes to the insolvency legislation since the Bankruptcy Act 1914 and the Companies Act 1948. Suffice to say that the challenge of a recession and new legislation brings back fond memories!

Having survived the 80s (which also included a marriage) and the early 90s (which included the birth of my son) I decided to face the challenge of the Joint Insolvency Examinations and qualified as a Licensed Insolvency Practitioner in 1996.

During 1996 to October 2006 I furthered my experience by working, in the main, for KPMG in Cardiff as a Client Services Manager. I was responsible for advising clients and stakeholders across the whole of the South West and South Wales on all aspects of insolvency. This period proved to be equally as challenging with yet further changes in the legislation – the Enterprise Act 2002 – and court rulings (Brumark and Leyland Daf ) which overruled decisions that had been relied upon by the profession for many years. Just when you thought you had cracked it!

In late 2006, I entered into the Scottish insolvency market and have since commuted between offices in Cardiff and Scotland managing an extensive portfolio of Trust Deeds and Sequestrations (Scotland), Individual Voluntary Arrangements (England & Wales) and Corporate insolvencies (both sides of the Border).  Managing my fear of flying during this period proved the most difficult of challenges to date – the weekly flights to and from Scotland have never made holidays in the UK (in the rain!) appear so attractive.

I am supported in my role by very experienced teams in both Cardiff and Scotland all of whom share my own caring and practical approach to clients and their problems; individuals who are employed or self employed, Company Directors with personal debt problems, Directors/Shareholders facing Corporate failure and Stakeholders concerned about a customers insolvency.

Despite being accused of “having joined the Jet Set” with my jaunts to Scotland I still live in my birth town; a “former” mining village in the South Wales Valleys. I am married with a 15 year old son and currently spend most of my spare time in a camper van traveling between race circuits supporting my son in his racing of Citreon Saxo’s (SAXMAX). Wellington boots, an umbrella and a set of “wets” are the latest addition to my wardrobe so I can hardly claim fashion as one of my interests! The few sunny days that we do get however go some way to compensate, I then swop the wellies for flip flops and the umbrella for a sun-hat and spend my time at the race circuit lazing on a deck chair with a large glass of wine!

I am also a keen football supporter (despite the expectation that I should follow the traditional sport of rugby) and I did manage a break from the race calendar earlier this year (and the wellies!) to travel to Wembley to watch Cardiff City in their chase for the FA Cup. A fantastic day notwithstanding the result.

And now for my spare time – well that’s when I don the rubber gloves and take on the challenge of the housework. Suffice to say I try not to have too much spare time!

Coming from a working class background and a mining village in the South Wales Valleys I believe that my own life experiences have helped me understand the many issues that clients face when trying to deal with debt. The miners strike of 1995 brought many debt related problems to my own family’s doorsteps; embarrassment, fear of the unknown, health problems, relationship breakdown and division within the family itself. My philosophy in life however is that for every problem there is a solution; however you just may need a little help to find it.
