Melanie Nicholas

Melanie Nicholas

I started work in the Swansea Official Receiver’s office (as was then called) in April 1981. After 6 years I transferred to the Cardiff Office eventually ending up as the Office manager at Cardiff from 1996 to 2002.

Here were many years of work bound by the restrictions placed on staff with an inability to give advice. I saw many people have bankruptcy orders made against them when I was acutely aware that if they had taken advice earlier they might not have needed to do so.

In late 2002 I made a decision to change career to a post in Department of Work and Pensions where I was the sole person in my region reviewing cases independently where benefit entitlement decisions across the whole benefit system may have been incorrectly turned down. I was making Employment Act and Benefit Act decisions on entitlement and very often overturning the original decision to enable people to have access to benefits they may have previously been denied.

In Feb 2005 the lure of a new challenge led me to take the plunge into the private-sector to manage the Cardiff office of a team of 6 staff for a large firm of Insolvency Practitioners.

By December 2007 I was fed up with the ‘factory approach’ to debt offered by the large firms and I approached Melanie Giles. I was impressed with the service Melanie Giles and her team offered to clients which was so much more client-orientated. I felt that as part of her team I would achieve greater job satisfaction in finding solutions for individual clients rather than working with the sole purpose of “making a case”. Thankfully Melanie agreed and here I am today.

As an individual I set myself high ethical standards and feel that I have now finally found my niche in the industry. I am very often the first person an individual speaks to having made the decision to sort out their debts.

I bring many years of knowledge of the processes involved and the workings of the industry. More importantly I feel my age and experience in life enable me to deal well with clients by establishing a friendly and supportive dialogue with them. I aim to give them a greater understanding of their situation and all of the ways which may be available to them to resolve their debt problems.

Outside of work I am married with two sons and in my spare time do volunteer work for a small animal rescue centre. I also foster Labrador dogs who through no fault of their own end up homeless. I enable these dogs to have a ‘family life’ whilst awaiting adoption by a new family. As a large breed dogs such a Labradors do not thrive in a kennel environment. This is a very rewarding role particularly when a dog is found a new family. It also has its drawbacks; my single Labrador has now become three Labradors as I could not part with two of my guests!
